Australian Government Research Training Program Details

The Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) provides block grants to higher education providers (HEPs) to support both domestic and overseas students undertaking research doctorate and research masters degrees.

Funding is provided on a calendar year basis for programs known as higher degrees by research (HDRs). 

The objectives of the RTP are to:

  • provide flexible funding arrangements to support training domestic students and overseas students undertaking HDRs at Australian HEPs
  • deliver graduates with the skills required to build careers in academia and other sectors of the labour market
  • support collaboration between HEPs and industry and other research end-users.

Eligibility Requirements for Australian Government RTP Scholarship 2024

To be considered for the Australian Government RTP Scholarship, you must:

  • Be a domestic or an international student
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university
  • Meet the requirements for Masters by Research or Doctoral degree at your chosen university

Benefits of 2024 Australian Government RTP Scholarship

The Australian Government RTP Scholarship covers;

  • tuition fees offset
  • a stipend for general living costs worth $50,291
  • allowances related to the ancillary cost of HDRs.

The RTP base and maximum stipend rates are indexed each year, effective from 1 January. The base and maximum RTP stipend rates for the following year are announced by 1 October each year.

To apply for the Australian Government RTP Scholarship, interested and qualified applicants should follow the procedures below to submit their application;

  • Ensure you meet the eligibility criteria of the programs and the university you are applying to
  • RTP scholarships are administered by individual (Higher Education Providers) HEPs who each have their own application and selection processes.
